With more than 75 years of experience, Alta has been an active participant in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Alta was founded in 1946 by the visionary Dr. R. K. Dhote, who pioneered the first manufacturing plant for Salicylic Acid and Aspirin in Asia.

The Story of our Success

1940s

Beginnings

Dr. R. K. Dhote, a doctor & freedom fighter, decides to attempt Indian pharmaceutical self-reliance and establishes Alta to tackle hitherto dominance of pharmaceutical production by foreign companies.

1950s

Foundations
Alta Laboratories, the first in India to indigenously develop Salicylic Acid & Aspirin, commences operations at the Khopoli plant, manufacturing patent drugs and striking a collaboration with Monsanto Chemicals.

1960s

Identity
Dr. Dhote establishes Lona Industries to diversify into pigments and dyes, and support Alta during the price control regime with a significant expansion in capacities for the Alta Group companies.

1970s

Expansion
Alta starts manufacturing PHBA and Paraben esters along with other specialty chemicals as Alta grows into many international markets.
